Portugal places additional order for Alstom trains

The Portuguese rail operator Comboios de Portugal (CP) has exercised an option to order 36 additional Adessia Stream trains from Alstom, bringing the total number of new trains in the fleet to 153.

The initial contract, signed in October 2025, provided for the delivery of 117 trains, but was subsequently extended by a further 36 units, bringing the total to 153 trains.

Of these:

  • 98 trains will be used for suburban transport in the Lisbon, Porto and Cascais areas;
  • 55 trains will serve regional routes in Portugal.

The total value of the contract for the entire new Adessia Stream train fleet is EUR 1.03 billio.

The trains will be used to modernize regional and suburban services, helping to increase capacity and improve the reliability of rail transport in the country.

The first trains are scheduled to enter service in 2029.

The trains will be adapted to the Portuguese rail network and will offer increased comfort, improved accessibility, and onboard connectivity.

Alstom factory in Portugal

As part of the project, Alstom will build a new production facility in Matosinhos, in the Porto region.

The factory will cover an area of over 20,000 square meters and will be built in partnership with Portuguese construction company DST.

The new industrial facility will create around 300 jobs, including in the fields of engineering, manufacturing, and technical trades.

According to the company, approximately 15% of the positions will be reserved for young unemployed people, the long-term unemployed, and people with health problems or disabilities.

“This project supports CP’s goal of providing more reliable and accessible rail services for passengers, while preparing the network for future demand growth,” said David Torres, CEO of Alstom Portugal.
