Alstom plans new locomotive maintenance centre in Poland

Alstom has announced plans to strengthen its locomotive service network in Poland by developing a modern maintenance centre in Rybnik, following the signing of a letter of intent with DB Cargo Polska. The proposed facility will expand Alstom’s service footprint and provide additional support for the growing number of locomotives in operation across the region.

The Rybnik site will complement Alstom’s existing centre in Toruń, which already specialises in servicing Traxx locomotives. Together, the two locations will enhance the company’s ability to meet increasing demand for locomotive maintenance solutions in Poland.

Supporting growth in intermodal transport

Over the past two years, Alstom has secured contracts to supply 61 third-generation Traxx Universal locomotives to operators in Poland. With more locomotives set to enter service, demand for comprehensive maintenance services is rising, particularly as the intermodal freight market expands along Eastern European corridors.

Beata Rusinowicz, Managing Director of Alstom in Poland, explained:

“For many years, Alstom’s solutions have helped rail operators achieve their strategic goals while contributing to the development of a sustainable and low-emission Trans-European Transport Network. In this context, operators in the region are increasingly investing in modern, energy-efficient rolling stock. This, in turn, is driving growing demand for comprehensive service solutions. At Alstom, we are committed to meeting this demand by offering technical support to our customers.”

DB Cargo Polska partnership

DB Cargo Polska welcomed the agreement as a key step in strengthening cooperation within the Polish rail sector. Marek Staszek, President of DB Cargo Polska, commented:

“The letter we signed with Alstom heralds a strong partnership. A partnership that is being forged here in Poland. Our country’s importance on the European railway map is steadily growing – it’s no coincidence that we signed the letter of intent at the TRAKO trade fair, where we celebrate, among other things, Polish rolling stock solutions and technology that are changing the shape and direction of railway development. Our Rybnik production and repair facility is one of the most modern in this part of Europe, and its attractive location guarantees optimal conditions for the maintenance and inspection of Traxx locomotives.”

The cooperation is expected to combine DB Cargo Polska’s modern infrastructure with Alstom’s technical expertise, ensuring efficient servicing and high fleet availability for operators.

Alstom’s global locomotive footprint

Since 2000, more than 6,000 Alstom locomotives have been ordered worldwide, underlining the company’s key role in advancing low-emission rail transport. Today, Alstom services over 2,450 locomotives globally, including more than 600 modern multi-system Traxx units.

The Traxx platform is designed for both passenger and freight operations, offering cross-border capability and reliability. These locomotives collectively travel more than 300 million kilometres annually across 20 European countries.

Recent orders highlight the platform’s growing popularity in Central and Eastern Europe, with 40 locomotives for OnTrain, 18 for CLIP Intermodal, and three for Captrain Polska.

Poland’s role in Alstom’s supply chain

Production of Traxx Universal locomotives takes place at Alstom’s Kassel plant in Germany, with key components such as carbodies manufactured in Wrocław, Poland. This integration of Polish facilities into the global supply chain reinforces the country’s strategic role in Alstom’s locomotive business.

The vehicles are homologated for operations across major European corridors, from France and the Benelux to Sweden, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Central and Eastern Europe, including Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, and Serbia.
