Alstom and Metrolinx have announced the entry into service of 18 Citadis vehicles for Toronto’s new Finch West Light Rail Transit (LRT) line, which opened in early December 2025. The new connection, which serves the expanding communities in the northwest of the city, marks an important step in the expansion of Ontario’s public transport network towards sustainable and efficient mobility solutions.
The Finch West line is 10.3 kilometers long, with 16 at-grade stations and two terminal stations, Finch West in the east and Humber College in the west, and is built on a dedicated route, separate from road traffic.
The connection to the existing network is made via a pedestrian portal to the Finch West station on Line 1 of the subway operated by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC).
The project is part of the Ontario government’s multi-year investment in urban transportation, aimed at reducing travel times and increasing service reliability.
Vehicles manufactured in Ontario, adapted to Canadian winters
The Citadis vehicles for the Finch West line were assembled in Brampton and tested in Kingston at Alstom’s Ontario production facilities. Each vehicle is 48 meters long and has a capacity of approximately 300 passengers, with easy access for people with reduced mobility and strollers.
The 100% low-floor design and specially adapted equipment allow operation in extreme winter conditions, down to -38°C. The vehicles are equipped with additional insulation, high-powered HVAC systems, and snow and ice removal solutions to ensure passenger comfort and operational performance.
Strengthened local industry and long-term maintenance
“Alstom is proud to deliver rail solutions designed and manufactured in Ontario,” said Michael Keroullé, President of Alstom Americas, highlighting the strong partnership with Metrolinx and TTC in modernizing Toronto’s transit network.
Vehicle production, carried out between 2020 and 2024, supported over 180 jobs in Ontario and contributed to the development of a skilled workforce in the rail sector. In recent months, Alstom has been working with local partners to test and prepare the fleet prior to commercial launch.
In addition to supplying the vehicles, Alstom will provide 30 years of maintenance, as well as track and catenary maintenance for the Finch West light rail line.
