Alstom acquires Swedish services company Motala Train

Alstom-Motala_Motalatrain-2Alstom has finalised its acquisition of Motala Train AB, a Swedish company specialised in refurbishment, heavy maintenance and repair of passenger trains. Alstom becomes the sole owner of the company, which generates a yearly turnover of around EUR15 million and employs 73 people, taking Alstom’s workforce to over 350 people in the country. The acquisition reinforces Alstom’s presence in the services business in Sweden and conforms to the company’s global strategy of regional growth and localisation.
The premises are mainly located in Motala, south of Stockholm, incorporating 5,600 m² of fully equipped workshops. In 2013, a second depot was established in Västeras, north-west of Stockholm, close to major traffic lanes.
This new asset provides services to Swedish railway operators for the entire refurbishment of their fleet, including the renovation of interiors and upgrades to key technical systems. The refurbishment activity accounts for around 70% of the current business. The rest is split between heavy maintenance, including contractual overhauls of trains, crash and damage repair services, including collision or fire damage, and repair work such as welding, electrical, painting or heavy mechanical assembly. The company boasts advanced competencies, especially in welding.
“The Swedish railway market has shown strong growth over the last decade, generating broad opportunities not only for trains but also for associated services. To be closer to its customers, Alstom has decided to further invest in the country. We know we can rely on a highly skilled workforce here in Motala to execute the current contracts and seize the new opportunities to come”, said Per Öster, Managing Director Nordics.
Alstom has been present in Sweden for over 10 years and is today one of the largest actors on the Swedish rail market. Alstom has sold over 300 regional trains from its Coradia platform in Sweden. The company maintains 135 commuter trains in Stockholm, providing daily on-time train service to over 280,000 commuters. In Sweden, Alstom is present at a total of 13 sites, including 11 depots.
