Adif has launched a tender to modernise and operate its railway telecommunications network, including the GSM-R system, across Spain’s high-speed rail network.
Spain’s railway infrastructure manager, Adif, has launched a tender for a contract worth almost EUR 175.5 million covering the maintenance, operation and modernisation of the telecommunications and power control systems used across the country’s high-speed rail network.
The contract will run for 48 months and is designed to ensure the continued reliability, availability and safety of Spain’s high-speed railway infrastructure.
In addition to the GSM-R railway communications system, the contract covers the operation and maintenance of fixed telecommunications networks, video surveillance and access control systems, infrastructure used by mobile network operators, as well as the centralised energy remote control system.
The works will cover several of Spain’s key high-speed corridors, including Madrid–Valladolid, Madrid–Barcelona–French border, the Zaragoza–Huesca and Camp de Tarragona–La Boella branches, together with the Madrid–Valencia, Madrid–Seville, Córdoba–Málaga, La Sagra–Toledo and Albacete–Bifurcación Albacete lines.
Technological upgrade for the high-speed network
The contract includes the maintenance and modernisation of the central GSM-R equipment, the communications technology that enables secure voice communications between train drivers and traffic control centres. It also covers centralised telecommunications management systems, monitoring and security platforms, and the central energy remote control system, which enables real-time monitoring and control of the electrical infrastructure supplying the high-speed network.
In addition, the programme covers both mobile and fixed telecommunications infrastructure, including fibre-optic networks, voice and data networks, tunnel installations, public address and intercom systems, video surveillance equipment, intrusion detection systems, and infrastructure used by mobile telecommunications operators.
The contract includes preventive maintenance, carried out at scheduled intervals, predictive maintenance, based on continuous monitoring of equipment performance and operating parameters, and corrective maintenance aimed at resolving faults and restoring system performance.
Alongside routine maintenance and operational services, the programme also provides for equipment upgrades and replacement works focused on technological modernisation, reducing maintenance costs and improving the energy efficiency of the high-speed railway network.
