Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway project is 98% complete

Ethiopia-Djibouti_addis-ababa-djibouti-railwayThe Ethiopian Railway Corporation has announced that the 656km Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway Project, which connects Sebeta, Mieso and Dewele, is 98% complete. “We are close to getting electricity supply and to commence operation at the beginning of the new year. Upon going fully operational, the line will play a significant role in boosting Ethiopia’s tourism sector, in addition to expediting import/export trade”,  Getachew Betru, chief executive officer of Ethiopian Railway Corporation explained.

The line comprises a 107km double track from Addis Ababa to Adama, with 549km of single track from Adama to Dewele. The new route will reduce travel time from Sebeta to the port of Djibouti by more than 50% and will form an important part of the East to West Africa Railway Network. The line will support both freight and passenger traffic.

The Sebeta-Dewele line, constructed by the China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC), is the first phase of the much larger Ethiopian National Railway Network Project, which highlights eight railway corridors for possible upgrade or construction.
