Aarhus orders eight Stadler Citylink tram-trains

Aarhus Letbane, the company responsible for operating and developing the light rail network in Aarhus, has awarded Stadler a contract to build eight Citylink tram-trains, capable of continuing to run even when the contact wire is covered with ice thanks to traction batteries. The contract, signed on December 2, also includes an option for twelve more units, as well as spare parts management services.

The agreement builds on a partnership that began several years ago when Stadler delivered the first trams and tram-trains for the Aarhus light rail network. The new Citylink vehicles will be designed and manufactured at Stadler’s plant in Valencia.

“This agreement represents our shared vision for sustainable mobility. Together with Aarhus Letbane, we are committed to developing solutions that make public transport more attractive and accessible. With Citylink, we are supporting Aarhus in its move towards a smarter, greener and fully integrated transport system,” said Iñigo Parra, CEO of Stadler Valencia.

Mie Krog, Chair of the Board of Aarhus Letbane, emphasized the importance of expanding the fleet: “The addition of more trains strengthens Light Rail as a vital link between the city of Aarhus and rural areas. It is a major benefit for passengers and the entire region.”

Hybrid vehicles for difficult winter conditions

Citylink tram-trains are specially built for the challenging climatic conditions in Aarhus. Their traction batteries enable:

  • hybrid operation for high energy efficiency in operation;
  • fully autonomous operation when ice affects the contact line;
  • uninterrupted service continuity in severe weather conditions.

Their versatility allows them to run on both urban tram lines and regional rail lines, eliminating the need for transfers and providing smoother and more attractive public transport.

High capacity and passenger comfort

The four-car configuration offers 324 total seats, including 152 seats (16 of which are foldable). The vehicles are designed for energy efficiency, low emissions, and a comfortable travel experience, in line with the city’s sustainability goals.

Modern accessibility and inclusive design

Citylink complies with all applicable PRM (persons with reduced mobility) standards.

Accessibility features include:

  • sliding steps at both ends for level boarding;
  • two wheelchair spaces per vehicle;
  • fully low floor with minimal steps;
  • easy movement inside the vehicle.

These elements ensure easy access for people with reduced mobility, families with children, or passengers with bulky luggage.
