A new, faster Railjet connection on the Vienna–Trieste route

With the change in train schedules on December 14 and the launch of the Koralmbahn, in addition to the existing connection to Venice, the new line also allows for a new, faster Railjet connection on the Vienna–Trieste route, reducing travel times by almost three hours.

The route now passes through Graz, Klagenfurt, Villach, Udine, and Grado, creating faster and more comfortable travel options between the Adriatic Sea and the capital Trieste. The first Railjet train was welcomed with a ceremony in Trieste on Sunday.

The opening of the Koralmbahn has given us the opportunity not only to expand our rail offering, but also to significantly reduce travel times for international services, such as the new Railjet connection on the Vienna–Trieste route, where the journey time has been reduced from 9 hours and 18 minutes to 6 hours and 38 minutes, bringing Italy and Austria even closer together. I am delighted that, through this initiative, we have taken an important step towards strengthening environmentally friendly mobility and connecting key regions more quickly,” said Kurt Bauer, Director of Long-Distance Transport at ÖBB-Personenverkehr AG.

The new Railjet connection on the Vienna–Trieste route offers daily services from Vienna Central Station, Graz Central Station, and Klagenfurt Central Station to the Italian city in the north-east of the country. Railjet trains depart from Trieste to the three major Austrian cities Monday through Friday at 2:22 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 2:37 p.m.

The ÖBB train service has been significantly expanded with the new timetable. For example, there is a half-hourly service between Vienna and Graz, resulting in 33 daily connections instead of the previous 18, and 29 daily connections from Graz to Klagenfurt instead of 8 bus connections, and 26 connections from Vienna to Klagenfurt instead of the previous 10. Faster direct connections to Italy and Slovenia make the international service more attractive.
